On April 26, 2019, Marvel Studios released what became Kevin Feige’s defining film: Avengers: Endgame. The movie was the culmination of the 22-films that came before it, each of which were a part of Marvel Studios’ Infinity Saga (and a 23rd film released on July 2, 2019, in Spider-Man: Far From Home). Just over 7-years later, Endgame remains the pinnacle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and remains my personal favorite MCU live-action project, just barely ahead of Avengers: Infinity War.
Earlier this month, Marvel Studios re-released Avengers: Endgame, dubbing it Avengers: Endgame Encore with a previously unseen ending which served as one of four newly added scenes to serve as a bridge between Avengers: Endgame and the 5th Avengers move: Avengers: Doomsday, releasing later this year.
Kevin Feige’s Multiverse Saga has been a mixed bag even for diehard MCU fans, but Feige and his Marvel Studios team seem to have successfully turned the tide as Doomsday approaches.
While critics have loudly proclaimed that “Superhero Fatigue” had consumed moviegoers, that was proven to be a huge over-exaggeration this year, as evident by the monster box office performance of Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day this Summer. The film (which served as the 4th MCU Spider-Man film), stunned insiders by emerging as the highest-grossing MCU film since Avengers: Endgame, the highest-grossing film of 2026 (so far), the highest-grossing film in the history of the North American box office, and the third highest-grossing film of all-time.
Now, with the release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, Avengers: Endgame has reemerged as the highest-grossing film of all-time! Endgame briefly held that prestigious position in 2019, dethroning Avatar. An Avatar re-release knocked Endgame down to # 2 but the success of Encore has elevated Endgame to $ 2.9 billion worldwide, falling just short of becoming the first film to ever gross $3 billion worldwide.
This latest Marvel Studios feat comes on the heels of several unprecedented accomplishments by Kevin Feige and company. MCU films take up 8 spots in the list of the top 25 highest-grossing films of all-time # 1 Avengers: Endgame ($ 2.9 billion), # 3 – Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($ 2.5 billion), # 8 – Avengers: Infinity War ($ 2 billion), # 9 – Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.9 billion), # 15 – The Avengers ($ 1.5 billion), # 21 – Avengers: Age of Ultron ($ 1.4 billion), # 23 – Black Panther ($ 1.3 billion), and # 25 – Deadpool and Wolverine ($ 1.3 billion). Furthermore, MCU films have been the highest-grossing movies in the year of their release 5 times: The Avengers (2012), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021),
Everyone at Marvel Studios is hopeful that Avengers: Doomsday will shatter even more records and given the hype surrounding this motion picture event that will see Robert Downey Jr portraying Marvel’s most iconic villain while Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers while considerinhg combined with the huge success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day this year, it seems that is a very strong possibility!
Ahead of the release of Avengers: Doomsday, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grossed $ 35 billion dollars worldwide, making it the most lucrative film franchise in motion picture history. Avengers: Doomsday will be the 39th\ MCU film and hits theaters in the United States on December 18, 2026.
