The 13th Marvel Studios MCU appearance at San Diego Comic Con took place this weekend, and Marvel Studios stole the show in Hall H on Saturday Night. Three of the biggest reveals were casting / project announcements. Marvel Studios CCO Kevin Feige announced that Ryan Gosling has been cast as Ghost Rider and is set to star in a Ghost Rider film in 2028. I thought this was a very exciting announcement! Sony previously made Ghost Rider films in 2007 and 2012, with Nicolas Cage in a starring role in both films. This film, that will be set in the MCU, could potentially lead to a Midnight Sons film (a team comprised of Marvel’s supernatural characters), or we could potentially see characters such as Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Blade, Elsa Bloodstone, or Moon Knight appear in the Ghost Rider film to set the stage for a Midnight Sons team-up down the road. Ghost Rider has a release date of 2028. Shawn Levy (who directed 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine) will be directing the film.
A new Black Panther has been confirmed! 32-year-old actor David Johnson will be portraying Toussant, the son of Nakia and the late T’Challa. Toussant was introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and will probably be a product of multiverse shenanigans since when we met the character he was under 10-years old. Ryan Coogler (who directed Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) will be directing Black Panther III, which is scheduled to be released in 2028. Letitia Wright is confirmed to be reprising her role as Shuri in the film. The late Chadwick Boseman will always be a part of the Black Panther MCU legacy, but I applaud this move by Feige as I feel we need a Black Panther / King of Wakanda in the MCU! I can’t wait to see what David Johnson does with the character.
Hayley Atwell will be returning to the MCU as Peggy Carter, confirmed by Kevin Feige on the Comic Con stage! I think most fans figured this was the case, but it’s great to have it confirmed. Atwell has portrayed Carter since 2011, showing up in MCU projects such as Captain America: The First Avenger, the Agent Carter One-Shot, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Ant-Man. She also starred in two Seasons of the Agent Carter television show, which has never been confirmed as MCU canon, despite Kevin Feige overseeing the production of the show during its First Season before Marvel Studios’ breakaway from the original version of Marvel Television in 2015. She also appeared in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. series that was also produced by Jeph Lobe’s Marvel Television, another series that has never been conformed as MCU canon. Hayley Atwell also appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a vision haunting Steve Rogers and she has furthermore portrayed Multiversal Variants of Peggy Carter in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (Captain Carter) and Avengers: Endgame (a Variant of Peggy that reunites with Steve on a Branched Timeline that came to exist due to Steve going back in time to the 1940’s). On top of all of that, she portrayed a Multiversal Variant of Peggy Carter (Captain Carter) in all three Seasons of Marvel Studios’ animated What If … series.

Robert Downey Jr joined the cast of Avengers: Doomsday on a crowded stage that included Kevin Feige and directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Winston Duke, Paul Rudd, Letitia Wright, Simu Liu, Robert Downey Jr, Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Rebecca Romijn, and many more. SDCC guests in Hall H were also privy to a new Avengers: Doomsday trailer, which will hopefully release online sooner than later.
Another surprise saw Ryan Reynolds show up at the convention wearing a gray Deadpool outfit and confronting Avengers: Doomsday cast members. Reynolds has not been confirmed by Marvel Studios as a member of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, though most insiders believe that he will appear in the movie. The gray look could be a tease for an eventual X-Force film once The Multiversal Saga comes to an end and The Mutant Saga gets kicked into motion. In the meantime, Avengers: Doomsday will officially allow us to see The Avengers, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and Doctor Doom all appear in the same movie; a first! Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
