Marvel Studios Presentation at D23 (2022) Review

Marvel Studios / The Walt Disney Company

Six weeks (or so) removed from San Diego Comic Con I’m not going to go too in-depth here on Marvel Studios’ D 23 2022 presentation today. I will say right out the gate, that this was an underwhelming presentation for anyone that was hoping for / expecting a full Phase Six Slate reveal. We got nothing of the sort. In fact, there were no new projects announced today at all. No Deadpool 3. No World War Hulk(s). No Spider-Man 4. Nothing. Projects such as these were not teased nor referenced by Kevin Feige or anyone else. There were also no Fantastic Four cast announcements, which was something that I fully expected. That was disappointing for me, but I’m not going to ramble on about everything that Marvel Studios’ presentation wasn’t. Instead, I’m going to simply touch upon what the presentation was.

Most of what we got today was follow-up details on the projects that were announced at SDCC 2022.

New footage from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was shown. Ironheart (Riri Williams) was part of that footage, and footage from the upcoming Disney+ series Ironheart was also shown. Anthony Ramos was confirmed to be portraying Parker Robins / The Hood in the series, which will revolve around tech vs magic! Iron Heart also got a new logo.

Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, and Jonathan Majors were on hand to promote Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, which will be released three-months after Wakanda: Forever. D23 attendees were treated to exclusive footage from the film, just as SDCC attendees were. This footage has not yet been made public, and Kevin Feige suggested that an official trailer for this film is not coming any time soon, despite the film coming out in a mere five months. The general consensus regarding this movie is that it is going to be an extreme tonal shift from the first two Ant-Man movies and an integral part of Kang the Conqueror’s MCU story.

The first trailer for Marvel Studios’ Halloween special Werewolf by Night debuted this weekend and is available for viewing in all of its glory online. This was DIFFERENT to say the least, a throwback to the classic horror movies of old for sure, complete with a black-and-white setting. Being a horror fan, this was not the turnoff for me that it may have been for others, and I’m curious to see what the general public thinks of this. I can see this show being either a surprise hit, or a complete failure, and based on the trailer, I wouldn’t be surprised either way, quite frankly. Hopefully, it will be a cleverly written special that will enhance the MCU, but being completely honest here, this could be even more divisive than She-Hulk. Oh, and for those who care, yes, Man-Thing is going to make an appearance in this show. Gael Garcia Bernal will be portraying Jack Russell in the special while Laura Donnelly will be portraying Elsa Bloodstone. Werewolf by Night will premiere on Disney+ on October 7, 2022.

The first trailer for Secret Invasion also debuted this weekend. Footage featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, and Emilia Clarke was showcased. The official trailer can be seen online. Secret Invasion will tie-in to the upcoming Armor Wars series on Disney+. A new Armor Wars logo was unveiled, but an official release date was not disclosed.

Cast members from Loki: Season Two appeared, including Tom Hiddleston, Sophie Di Martino, and Owen Wilson, D23 attendees were shown some footage from the series and Ke Huy Quan was announced as having joined the cast.

Matt Shakman (WandaVision) was officially introduced as the director of Fantastic Four. Sadly, no casting announcements were made.

Both Echo and Daredevil: Born Again were promoted, Alaqua Cox, Vincent D’Onofrio, and Charlie Cox all appeared on-stage. Kingpin and Daredevil will both appear in Echo. No confirmations one way or the other were revealed pertaining to whether or not the old Marvel Netflix shows are canon. That remains a mystery. In the meantime, footage of Charlie Cox’s upcoming appearance as Daredevil in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law was shown. Daredevil: Born Again received a new logo as well.

Captain America: New World Order also received a new logo, and it was revealed that Tim Blake Nelson will be at long last reprising his role as Samuel Sterns / The Leader from 2008’s The Incredible Hulk in the film! This pretty much confirms for me that we will be seeing Nelson’s character in She-Hulk, but this is exciting news either way! Joaquin Torres (portrayed by Danny Ramirez) and Isiah Bradley (portrayed by Carl Lumbly), both seen in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, will also be in the film.

The cast that will comprise The Thunderbolts was revealed! We are getting a lineup comprised of Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Valentina Allegra de Fontaine), David Harbour (Red Guardian), Hannah John-Kamen (The Ghost), Wyatt Russell (US Agent), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), and Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier)! Black Widow‘s Taskmaster will also be part of the team. There was no mention of Daniel Bruhl’s Baron Zemo, which was disappointing, but perhaps he will be the villain of the film!?! Regardless, this is a pretty cool lineup for the team and I’m looking forward to this movie!

Exclusive footage of The Marvels was also shown to D23 attendees with appearances from Brie Larsen, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani. Zawe Ashton will be prominently featured in the film and Goose the Flerken will return!!!

The festivities also included a live performance of Rogers: The Musical, as seen in Hawkeye.

And that’s a wrap for Marvel Studios at D23 2022. It may be next Summer before we get any more major announcements, but we have plenty as MCU fans to anticipate in the meantime! it’s going to be a thrilling ride over the course of the next three years as we build to Avengers: Secret Wars!
