Marvel Studios announced I Am Groot as a series that was being developed for the new Disney+ streaming service on December 10, 2020, as part of Disney’s Investor’s Day.

Each I Am Groot short follows Baby Groot (Groot II) as he grows up as a member of The Guardians of the Galaxy. That would place these shorts somewhere between the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two upon the MCU (Sacred) Timeline, as confirmed in the 2023 book Marvel Studios – The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline.

My I Am Groot: Season One Review

To be honest, there isn’t going to be all that much to this review, but it’s the MCU and it’s Baby Groot, so I wanted to write something about this series for those who may be interested, but there really isn’t all that much to get into because these shorts are SHORT!

A five-minute runtime was already a really small window within to work, but around half of that is actually credits, so you’re really looking at about three minutes worth of actual story per episode, which means the entire first half of this series can be consumed in about 15-minutes.

Is it worth the time? That of course is entirely up to each viewer, but I will say that it is, but only from a strict standpoint of entertainment. There isn’t really anything here that enriches the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of narrative or storytelling. But if you simply want to laugh, or at least smile, and if you like Baby Groot, then what’s 15-minutes?

The fifth episode titled Magnum Opus was far and away my favorite, and really, that’s mostly because Rocket was in it. The episode also features the song You Can Get It if You Really Want by Jimmy Cliff, and the use of that music gave Magnum Opus a very Guardians of the Galaxy feel. This episode revolves around little Groot drawing a picture of his family and causing a massive explosion in the process. Rocket’s animation wasn’t nearly what it is in the live-action MCU films, but Bradley Cooper provided his voice, and that was enough for it to feel like the character for me!

The plot of the other first-half of episodes that were released on August 10, 2022, are mostly apparent by the titles. Groot’s First Steps feature little Groot’s emergence from the pot we saw him in during the credits of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. The Little Guy sees Baby Groot land in a godlike role after encountering some tiny blue Grunds. I don’t think that I needed to see Baby Groot passing gas at this point in my life, but overall, it was a cute (and somewhat dark) little story. In Groot’s Pursuit, Baby Groot encounters a shape-shifting alien (Iwua) that he ends of dancing with. In Groot Takes a Bath, well, Groot takes a bath and grooms his leaves.

I thought all of the animation pertaining to Baby Groot was really well done. The colors were bright and he for the most part looked like he stepped right out of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two.

In the end, these shorts aren’t thought-provoking or game-changing, or anything like that. They’re just fun little stories, or sequences really, that are probably intended more than anything else to sell more Baby Groot toys, but hey, there’s nothing wrong with that! I adore Baby Groot, so I had fun with these for what they were.
