I received Deadpool as a Christmas gift from my family in 2019. He was my 13th Hot Toys figure. At the time, Disney’s acquisition of Fox was a done deal, but as fans, we didn’t know what the future held for Wade Wilson in terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and whether or not Marvel Studios would reboot the character. As I write this, I can now safely include Deadpool as a MCU Hot Toy, as Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine will be releasing later this year in theaters, celebrating Deadpool’s arrival into the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
Deadpool is one of my favorite Marvel characters. I own several Deadpool Marvel Omnibus collections and I own just about every Deadpool comic book that has ever been published in some form another, most in hardcover trade collections. Why do I love Deadpool as a character? Well, first and foremost, Deadpool makes me laugh.
Historically, throughout my life, I have coped with tragedy and sadness through laughter. It was worse when I was younger, but I felt the easiest way to not cry was to laugh. I’ve never intended to be irreverent or disrespectful in the ways that I coped; if you know me, you know that I deeply and profoundly care about the way bad things affect good people. Tragedy oftentimes hurts me in deep places within my soul and if I’m being honest, I don’t handle loss and tragedy well at all. It’s fundamentally affected my faith and religious views as I just do not understand the horrors of this world or why so many people do the awful things that I do. It sucks.
That being said, I do believe that laughter is the best medicine, and no Marvel character makes me laugh like Deadpool. Yes, he’s raunchy and over-the-top, and overall ridiculous, but it’s all part of his charm me as someone who isn’t easily offended, it works for me far more often than it doesn’t.
Beneath the humor though, there is a distinct sadness to Deadpool as well. He is a very tortured soul what with his cancer and his physical appearance. Tragedy is a cornerstone of the character and how he copes with that makes him quite complex, unique, and at least for me, relatable.
I was immensely excited to see the first Deadpool film on Valentine’s Day weekend in 2016 and I absolutely adored that film and Ryan Reynolds’ performance in it. Ryan Reynolds is the living embodiment of the Deadpool character; one of the most shining examples of a comic book character coming to life from off the pages! I thoroughly enjoyed Deadpool 2 in 2018; not quite as much as the first one, but a whole lot all the same, and this Hot Toys Deadpool figure from Deadpool 2 was an exciting addition to my collection.
The figure looks just like he stepped out of the Deadpool 2 film with a perfect dark red costume and body build. Somehow, despite the fact that the mask on the figure is not removable, it actually looks like Ryan Reynolds is under the mask! The figure comes with loads of accessories: swords, guns, several alternate hands, an X-Force training t-shirt, a pair of high heels, and a little white unicorn. Deadpool also comes with several sets of alternate eyes with which you can change his expression on his mask; a really cool feature.
All indications are that the version of Deadpool seen in Deadpool and Deadpool 2 is coming into the MCU in Deadpool and Wolverine, via (some version of) the TVA (Time Variance Authority) and I cannot wait to see what all craziness that film incorporates. It’s sure to epic and while I’ve had this Hot Toys figure for years to express my Deadpool fandom, it’s really cool that it can now express my MCU fandom as well!
