Gamora was my 2st Hot Toys figure as I was finally getting around to picking up Guardians of the Galaxy figures. Owning Gamora was a long time coming. This figure was notoriously delayed, failing to come out until after Avengers: Endgame despite being announced as part of the Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two line back in 2017.
Personally, I’m glad that she was delayed, because those delays enabled me the time and allotted money to add her to my collection! Gamora was the second original Guardian of the Galaxy that I owned in Hot Toy form following Rocket, who I added to my collection on Father’s Day in 2019. I received Gamora’s sister Nebula on Father’s Day two years later from my wife and children in 2021, and getting Nebula pretty much made Gamora a must-own for me, and I received her as an anniversary present from my wife in the Fall of 2021.
Though I am a bigger fan of Nebula than Gamora on-screen, Gamora is a character that I have enjoyed much more in the Marvel comics, and I have followed her exploits closely ever since Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning revamped The Guardians team with the launch of their 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series. In the comics, Gamora is feared throughout the Universe for her ruthlessness and effectiveness when it comes to fighting and she has a really great dynamic with the other members of her team.
The MCU’s Gamora is extremely complex with her being Thanos’ favorite daughter and Star-Lord’s love interest. For all of the great things that James Gunn did with the character in his two Guardians films, it was Avengers: Infinity War that really established Gamora as an upper-tier character, and it was that film that truly won me over to the MCU’s version of the character as I admired her willingness to sacrifice herself as well as her love story for the sake of the greater good. That film also did a great job of showcasing Gamora’s affection for Nebula while letting her come out of her shell a bit and not come across as so rigid and stuck-up.
Sadly, Gamora also DIED in that movie, but Zoe Saldana stuck around in the role as a Variant of the Gamora that Thanos sacrificed at Vormir.
Gamora is a really great piece; very detailed and very well dressed and sculpted. She towers over Rocket but stands just short of Nebula. The paint job on the skin is stellar. It’s bright, but not too bright, and she really makes the shelf pop. The face sculpt is dead-on accurate. That is Zoe Saldana! The hair meanwhile is rooted and of my three Hot Toys figures with rooted hair (Wanda Maximoff and Natasha Romanoff), Gamora’s hair is the longest and it looks the best. It lays down well and the dark hair with red highlights (particularly at the ends) come together really nicely, and despite being a fan of sculpted hair, I think this figure actually looks better for having it rooted. I also really like the look and texture of Gamora’s jacket and the way that it fits her.
Gamora comes with several accessories, including multiple hands, a gun, a sword, and a jetpack, but my favorite accessory that she comes with is Baby Groot!
With Groot being amongst my favorite Marvel characters and a member of The Guardians, this was like a two-for-one deal for me, as I didn’t own an official Hot Toys Groot figure prior to getting Gamora. So, having Baby Groot (who is adorably sculpted holding the bomb that Rocket wants him to implant in Ego’s physical brain) puts me one step closer to owning each member of the original Guardians team, and all of these figures look really great together on the shelf!
