Thor Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday

The second Teaser Trailer for Avengers: Doomsday was dropped online by Marvel Studios on Tuesday Morning, confirming that Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will return for the film! The announcement followed the reveal from a week earlier that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers would return for the film as well.

Hemsworth’s name was one of the many that was included in the chairs cast reveal from earlier in 2025, so this wasn’t a surprise, but the trailer is noteworthy for its tone.

The Thor that we and hear in the trailer is not the goofy version of Thor that we got in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder. This is a very serious Thor who is praying to his father for the strength to fight the battle ahead of him and return home to his beloved daughter Love. The dialogue is full of emotion, sincerity, and perhaps a hint of dread. This is a humble God of Thunder, who, despite his many losses, still finds himself with much to lose.

Thor: Love and Thunder is where we last saw Hemsworth’s Thor and it was in that divisive film (that I enjoyed a lot more than most people) where we first met Love – the biological daughter of Gorr the God-Butcher, who Thor adopted after Gorr used his Eternity Wish to bring Love back to life. Love is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth’s real-life daughter: India Rose Hemsworth and she is briefly featured in the Doomsday Teaser. I thought Thor promising to be to Gorr’s daughter what Gorr could no longer be, was a beautiful sequence, especially seeing the weary and bitter Gorr overcome all of the raw anger and emotion that had for so long fueled him, to find faith in the unlikeliest of places.

That being said, I won’t use this time to defend Love and Thunder. You can read my review of that film if that’s something you’re interested in. I will say, however, that I am excited to see the return of a more serious Thor! This feels like the Thor that we saw at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame; the Thor that desperately wanted to kill Thanos and did so with a bitter, almost casual, beheading of the Mad Titan.

That’s a very, very dangerous Thor and I cannot wait to see him take on Doctor Doom!

Avengers: Doomsday will arrive in theaters on December 18, 2026. Chris Hemsworth joins an already-announced cast that includes Chris Evans (Steve Rogers), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Wyatt Russell (John Walker), Tenoch Huerta (Namor), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Lewis Pullman (Bob Reynolds), Danny Ramirez (Joaquin Torres), David Harbour (Alexei Shostakov), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Hannah John-Kamen (Ava Starr), and Tom Hiddleston (Loki), along with Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm), and Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards), and X-Men film franchise veterans Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Channing Tatum (Gambit), and of course, the returning Robert Downey Jr (Doctor Doom).

Avengers: Doomsday will mark Chris Hemsworth’s 9th live action MCU appearance as Thor: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Thor: Love and Thunder (2019). He also voiced a frog version of Thor in Loki: Season One (2021) and provided the voice for Multiversal Variants of Thor in several episodes of the animated What If …? series on Disney+.
