Each I Am Groot short follows Baby Groot (Groot II) as he grows up as a member of The Guardians of the Galaxy. That would place these shorts somewhere between the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy film and the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two upon the MCU (Sacred) Timeline.

My I Am Groot: Season Two Review

As was the case with the First Season of this show, there honestly isn’t going to be all that much to this review, but these shows are in the MCU and they feature Baby Groot, so I wanted to write something about them for those who may be interested, but there really isn’t all that much to get into because these shorts are SHORT!

A five-minute runtime was already a really small window within to work, but around half of that is actually credits, so you’re really looking at about three minutes worth of actual story per episode, which means the entire second half of this series can be consumed in about 15-minutes.

Are these shows worth the time? That of course is entirely up to each viewer, but I will say that they are, but only from a strict standpoint of entertainment. There isn’t really anything here that enriches the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of narrative or storytelling. But if you simply want to laugh, or at least smile, and if you like Baby Groot, then what’s 15-minutes?

Just as was the case with Season One, the fifth episode titled Groot and the Great Prophecy was my favorite, for it had some actual stakes to it and saw Jeffrey Wright (What If …? Season One) reprise his role as The Watcher as Baby Groot fulfils an ancient prophecy much to the dismay of The Watcher. It was clever and cute, and focused on the sort of carnage and chaos little Groot II is capable of if left to his own devices.

The plot of each episode is mostly apparent by the titles, but I had a lot of fun with seeing little Groot’s early obsession with video games, which we would see explored in Avengers: Infinity War. You also get to see Baby Groot play in the snow, obsess over ice cream, and temporarily obtain the sense of smell.

I thought all of the animation pertaining to Baby Groot was really well done. The colors were bright and he for the most part looked like he stepped right out of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume Two.

In the end, these shorts aren’t thought-provoking or game-changing, or anything like that. They’re just fun little stories, or sequences really, that are probably intended more than anything else to sell more Baby Groot toys, but hey, there’s nothing wrong with that! I adore Baby Groot, so I had fun with these for what they were.
