Hot Toys Loki (Thor: TDW) Review

One of the ways that I express my MCU fandom is through the collecting of Hot Toys. I actually own a variety of MCU action figures; some Marvel Select figures, a few Marvel Legends figures, and a lot of Funko Pop’s, but Hot Toys are the cream of the crop! I started collecting Hot Toys in 2017. I’ve always enjoyed displaying my MCU passion in my home, and I had a very dear friend of mine urging me to jump down the Hot Toys rabbit hole for years (thanks Mark!) but I just kept resisting due to the price of the figures. In 2017, I finally dipped my feet into the Hot Toys waters however, courtesy of my wonderful wife (thanks April!), who surprised me with my very first Hot Toys figure as a Father’s Day gift.

Loki is my favorite character in all of comics, and my favorite character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in fact, so my wife appropriately started there, picking up the Hot Toys Loki figure from Thor: The Dark World. I was completely blown away by my first Hot Toys figure, to such a degree in fact, that I was hooked! Before my Loki figure could collect dust, I was already contemplating what my next Hot Toys figure would be. There is just so much detail and quality to these figures, and my shelves have never looked better!

Loki’s box art is basic but splendid, with a shiny and reflective gold, Loki’s name in big bold letters, and some Asgardian-inspired writing and symbols. Out of the box, Loki looks spectacular! There wasn’t much in the way of accessories with this figure. He came with some extra hands, his trusty dagger, and some chain-linked handcuffs to give him the look that he had when he was taken before Odin at the beginning of Thor: The Dark World. I have never actually displayed Loki in those chains though, for the rightful King of Asgard should not be restrained!

Loki is a fantastic looking figure. The head sculpt is superb with Tom Hiddleston’s likeness captured really well. Loki boasts a subtle smirk that screams mischief, and his long, sculpted hair doesn’t get in the way of his clothing or his articulation. Loki is dressed in a majestic multi-layered outfit. The dark greens, golds, and blacks all come together nicely, and his outfit is loaded with detail. The stand that comes with Loki is simple but does the job that it is supposed to do.

I enjoyed Thor: The Dark World far more than most, specifically because of Loki and Tom Hiddleston’s performance in that film. I see 2011’s Thor, 2012’s The Avengers, and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World as a “Loki Trilogy” of sorts as the character’s arc in those three films really stands out when they are watched back-to-back-to-back. My first choice in a Loki Hot Toys figure at the time would have been the Loki from The Avengers, but in 2017, that figure was seeing huge markups on the aftermarket. This Loki was far more affordable, and in the end, he was the perfect piece with which to start my Hot Toys collection and because he was the first, this figure will always hold a very special place in my heart.
